This technology readily accommodates the machining of deep holes in various configurations and effectively addresses challenging geometries such as cross holes, inclined holes, blind holes, and flat-bottomed blind holes. It is suitable not only for machining deep holes with very high length-to-diameter ratios—up to 300:1—but also for precision shallow-hole operations, with a minimum drilling diameter as small as 0.7 mm.
Current Status of Domestic Deep-Hole Drilling Machines

Since China’s accession to the WTO, the manufacturing sector has been confronted with both opportunities and challenges. In response, enterprises in the deep-hole drilling machine industry have timely adjusted their strategies and adopted proactive measures, resulting in robust growth in both production and sales. As of April 2005, incomplete statistics indicate that enterprises in this sector had produced more than 1,000 deep-hole drilling machines, with a total output value exceeding RMB 390 million—representing year-on-year growth of over 10% compared with 2004. Moreover, various economic indicators, including the industry’s value added, product sales ratio, total employee wages, and export delivery value, all recorded varying degrees of increase. New products and new technologies also saw substantial year-on-year improvements, underscoring the favorable operating performance of firms in the sector.

(1) Changes in the product structure of industry enterprises: Enterprises in the deep-hole drilling machine industry primarily serve the automotive, motorcycle, internal combustion engine, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, and chemical industries.

The machinery, defense, energy, light industry, and home appliance sectors demand specialized equipment. Following China’s accession to the WTO and its subsequent closer integration with the global machine-tool industry, companies in the deep-hole drilling machine sector have begun shifting toward CNC and flexible manufacturing solutions. Over the past two years, production data indicate that market demand for CNC machine tools and machining centers has been rising, while demand for conventional deep-hole drilling, boring, and milling machines has been declining. According to the “Key Economic Indicator Report for Enterprises in the Machine Tool Industry” published by the China Machine Tool Industry Association, even based solely on the performance of several large, nationally significant enterprises, production in 2003 totaled 890 CNC machine tools valued at RMB 161.87 million and 148 machining centers valued at RMB 57.70 million; in 2004, output reached 985 CNC machine tools worth RMB 258.38 million and 159 machining centers worth RMB 70.99 million; and as of April 2005, cumulative production of CNC machine tools and machining centers had already approached the full-year levels recorded in 2003. This trend underscores the market’s growing orientation toward CNC technology, high-precision manufacturing, and integrated process equipment.

(2) Moreover, between 2001 and 2002—a period of less than two years—more than a dozen enterprises successively underwent shareholding reform; many small factories virtually all exited state ownership and transitioned to private ownership. Today, several key state-owned enterprises are also considering shareholding reform, making the shift an unstoppable trend. “After passing through four stages—first being discriminated against and dismissed, then gradually gaining recognition, followed by being taken seriously, and finally receiving high-level attention—the private sector has now burst into vigorous vitality.” Enterprises in the deep-hole drilling machine industry are currently experiencing rapid development through various forms, including shareholding and privatization.

(3) Current Status and Development Trends of Deep-Hole Drilling Machine Technology and Equipment: Deep-hole drilling machines and their automated production lines represent highly integrated, electromechanically coupled manufacturing technologies and comprehensive process equipment with a high degree of automation. Characterized by high efficiency, superior quality, and cost-effectiveness, they are widely used in the construction machinery, transportation, energy, defense, light industry, and home appliance sectors. Traditionally, China’s deep-hole drilling machines and automated lines have relied primarily on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic controls, with their main application areas being large- and medium-sized box-type and shaft-type components produced in relatively high volumes (in recent years, deep-hole drilling machines developed for machining connecting rods and plate components have also gained a certain share). These machines perform operations such as drilling, reaming, and broaching; tap various types of threads; bore holes; turn end faces and bosses; machine internal grooves of diverse shapes; and mill flat and contoured surfaces. Deep-hole drilling machines come in numerous configurations, including large and small models, single-sided, double-sided, three-sided, horizontal, vertical, inclined, and composite designs, as well as multi-station rotary-table deep-hole drilling machines. With continuous technological advancement, a new type of deep-hole drilling machine—the flexible deep-hole drilling machine—has gained increasing popularity. It features multiple spindle heads, interchangeable spindle heads, encoder-equipped follow-along fixtures, and automatic tool changers, combined with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and numerical control (NC) systems, enabling arbitrary adjustment of work-cycle control and drive systems and providing flexible adaptability to a wide range of machining tasks. As deep-hole drilling machines and their automated lines are highly sophisticated, specialized high-tech products designed to meet specific customer requirements, they involve a broad spectrum of technologies, including machining processes, cutting tools, measurement, control, diagnostic monitoring, cleaning, assembly, and leak testing. Overall, the technological level of China’s deep-hole drilling machines and automated lines lags behind that of developed countries, and many of the high-end deep-hole drilling machines and automated lines required domestically are still imported from abroad. The substantial import of process equipment inevitably leads to larger investment scales and higher product manufacturing costs.
